Barry University has announced the launch of an esports program beginning this fall. The school is in the process of constructing an esports gaming room that will support the team, which will compete against other college/university esports teams. The space will also support individual students interested in gaming. Led by Director of Athletics Michael L. Covone, the Barry esports program will be a member of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). Games sponsored by NACE for esports include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Hearthstone, League of Legends, Overwatch, Paladins, Rocket League, SMITE, and Starcraft II.
“We have already had a meeting with President Gash, and he has expressed his interest in esports,” Bolton said. “He’s already seen the potential with this industry, and I know he’s already been meeting with some of the big leaders in the gaming world because that was something on his agenda already. The esports industry is a phenomenon that shows no sign of slowing down. Professional sports tournaments are filling huge stadiums worldwide, while millions of viewers tune in at home to watch the best players battle it out in their favorite games. As more investments are made, sponsorship budgets increase and more developers push an esports agenda, the industry continues to climb from strength to strength – even sporting giants such as Formula 1, FIFA and the NFL are getting involved.
